Use & Care Instructions for Invisalign Aligners
Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care. Here are some tips to help ensure proper use and to avoid damaging your aligners.
Aligner insertion:
- Check your aligner number before inserting it into your mouth.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Brush your teeth and aligners before inserting them. Never use hot water on aligners.
- When inserting each aligner, gently push the aligners over the front teeth. Then apply equal pressure using your fingertips, to the tops of your left and right molars until the aligner snaps into place.
- DO NOT BITE your aligners into position. This could damage them and make them more difficult to wear.
- Use the Chewies provided to help fully seat the aligners and stimulate blood flow, which will help treatment progress more efficiently.
Aligner removal:
- Using your fingertips, lift the edge of the aligner off the back teeth and gradually work your way forward, gently pulling to remove the aligner.
- You may use a retainer removal device or crochet hook to help loosen the aligner
- Rinse the aligner with cold or lukewarm water - never hot as this could warp or distort the aligner - shake off excess water and store your aligners in the case provided.
Daily Care and Maintenance of your Aligners:
- Clean your aligners with a soft bristled brush (no toothpaste) and lukewarm water prior to each use.
Proper Oral Hygiene:
- Remove your aligners for eating and drinking anything other than cold water.
- Brush and/or floss after each meal or snack prior to re-inserting the aligners. Keeping clean aligners on clean teeth prevents an increased risk of cavities.
- Regular cleanings and check-ups with your dentist are recommended.
Patient Cooperation Using Invisalign Aligners
Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care. To ensure that your Invisalign aligner treatment progresses on schedule and as smoothly as possible, it is imperative that you understand the procedures that are involved in your treatment.
- It is critical that you follow instructions on placing, wearing, and cleaning your aligners.
- Aligners must be worn as instructed to achieve the treatment goals. For the majority of treatment, aligners should be worn all day, except when eating or drinking. The target wear time for optimal effectiveness is 22 hours/day.
- Always store your aligners in their case when not being worn to avoid loss or damage. If you lose an aligner, Invisalign charges for replacements.
- The Aligners are designed to sequentially move your teeth, so it is very important to wear each Aligner in the order and for the duration prescribed by our doctor. Do not wear aligners out of order.
- Keep at least one set of previous aligners as backup in case the current aligner breaks or goes missing.
- Tooth coloured attachments may be bonded to your teeth to assist the tooth movement and need to remain in place until our doctor approves their removal. Aligners may have “bubbles”, or cut outs to fit around those attachments, and/or indents (Power Ridges).
- IPR/polishing between your teeth may be necessary to create space for crowded teeth or to allow teeth in each jaw to fit together properly.
- Keep your scheduled appointments – this is the only way we can be sure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
- Additional Aligners may be needed in order to completely finish your treatment.
- After treatment is complete, retainer wear is prescribed to maintain the smile you've invested in. Retainers require a lifetime commitment.
Your treatment plan has been personally designed by our doctor. The results now depend on your dedication and commitment to full-time wear of your aligners.
